I’d love to thank the photographers and editors that I have worked with through the years, especially my uncle Ray that loaned me his Pentax K1000 sometime in 1992. I job shadowed Chris Assaf at the Journal Tribune in Biddeford, Maine while I was in high school as part of an economics class. Shawn Ouellette taught me a ton about shooting sports, especially when his beloved Thornton Academy was involved. I taught photographer Liz Schultz how to drive a manual transmission, which didn’t work out so well. Rob Sumner shared his love of the water and buying big glass. Portland Press Herald photographer Gordon Chibroski taught me to “shoot action, then reaction.” Greg and Giselle Rec just because they kick ass! Bangor Daily News photographer Kevin Bennett for stories of outrunning police while chasing a criminal while taking pictures and winning awards. Russ Kendall shared his home, passion, grill and introduced me to sushi! Caleb Raynor drove me to be a better photographer. Scott Haskell opened his heart and shared his experiences. Anthony Robert La Penna is a crazy beast of a photographer.
The people of the Morning Call in Allentown, Pennsylvania include Naomi Halperin, Harry Fisher, Michael Kubel, Ben Morrison, Chuck Zovko, Monica Cabrera and Don Miller. They let me in their office and lives and I am forever grateful!
I couldn’t believe golf photographer Stephen Szurley called me after I called Golf Digest and offered my photography assisting services in 1997 while visiting Miami when I was 20 years old. He showed me the ropes, from within the ropes. Dom Furor and JD Cuban too!
I have the best photographer friends in Orlando! They include Eric Larson, Jen Sens, Ben Van Hook, Mark Ashman, Todd Anderson, Gary Bogdon, Preston Mack, Brian Hess, Tyrone Boyce, Bill Doster and a friend in heaven, Chris Livingston.
I’ve driven thousands of miles around Florida with Houston photographer and former Sporting News photographer Robert Seale. Robert is a true pro. I admire his planning and pre-visualization. He plays the “air guitar” in the car and especially the “air drums.” I almost had a hole in my car floor to prove it.
I still can’t believe the opportunity to work with and be friends with my photography idol Walter Iooss. I did a speech about Walter in 1996. I called a number in the magazine, had them transfer me to the editorial office, which transferred me to the photography department. Somehow, Walter was there to answer the phone. I was nervous as shit asking him questions for a speech. Walter is a legend.
A few of my favorite stories… Walter was supposed to photograph Johnny Damon. We played golf in Orlando until Damon’s agent called. He never did, so we ended up playing 27 holes. We’ve played Bay Hill, Reunion, MacArthur, Jupiter Country Club, Grande Pines and more. We told Charl Schwartzel to win the Masters three weeks before the tournament. He did. Tiger Woods entered a room for his Walter Iooss photo session and yelled, “Walter! What the fuck are you doing here!?” He then showed Tiger a preview of his book Heaven. When Walter missed a flight for a CC Sabathia Sports Illustrated cover shoot, they were happy to reschedule. I heard with my own two ears Derek Jeter tell Walter that he’d like to be his assistant for the swimsuit shoots.
I’ve won a few golf long drive competitions in my day, played hockey, baseball and softball. I’ve got an English Bulldog named “Elvis.”
Biddeford, Maine is my hometown. I grew up about a mile from the ocean. It’s a great community 20 minutes from Portland and 90 from Boston. My first jobs were at Ron’s Video and Dutch Elm Golf Course. After photography school, I worked at our local newspaper, the Journal Tribune.
Joan, my mother, taught math for 28 years and is now retired. She got a chair thrown at her on her VERY first day of teaching, and since then, hasn’t taken any crap from anybody. Don, my dad, builds houses in southern Maine. My younger brother Jeff and I should’ve taken over the little family business, but we stepped on so many nails, stapled hands to Tyvek, lugged shingles to the roof and smashed too many fingers with a hammer. However, I recently made my own dining room table and office desk, so the old mans lessons are permanent. My parents are happily married snowbirds that love golfing, entertaining, family, house projects and more golfing.
Cyr is a common last name in Biddeford, Maine. Cy Cyr is not a common name in any other part of the world. It’s pronounced like “sigh sear.” People really get a kick out of it, especially TSA, hotels, bars and other places that need an ID. They often ask, “is that really your name?” ….while holding my license. Or people will ask “is your name short for anything?” I usually close an eye and respond with “Cyclops.”
